Lessons in the Technique

Individual Lessons – Questions and Answers

Whilst talks and group sessions will give you an introduction to the Alexander Technique, they are no substitute for individual lessons with a qualified Alexander Teacher if you want to learn the Technique. A teacher can give you undivided attention and learning which is tailored to your particular needs. Individual lessons also offer you an opportunity to address particular issues which might have special relevance for you.

If you would like more information or to discuss your needs further please contact me. You can also arrange a half hour preliminary assessment. There is no charge for this service.

All communication is completely confidential.

What happens in a lesson ?

Alexander lessons are very practical and in a typical session we will explore daily activities such as sitting, standing and walking. I will use light hands-on contact and verbal explanations to guide you in identifying your patterns of movement. Normally, part of a lesson involves working on you while you lie down on an ‘Alexander’ table with a number of books supporting your head.

In a lesson you will be actively engaged in the learning process which can be both relaxing and enjoyable. Pupils often feel taller and lighter with better balance and poise after a lesson.

You will also be encouraged to apply what you’ve learned to your everyday activities.

Although only gentle, light touch is employed in Alexander lessons (no manipulation) occasionally people may experience tiredness and aches and pains as they adjust to a new way of being.

The Alexander Technique is not a treatment and an AT teacher will never diagnose a medical condition which you may have. The Technique is a whole mind and body approach to promoting a better quality of life, whether that involves reducing pain or improving your performance in a range of occupational or leisure activities.

It’s fine to wear your usual clothing although women may find it easier to wear trousers or leggings even if these are worn beneath a skirt for the duration of the lesson. You will probably be asked to remove your shoes.

How many lessons will I need ?

The Alexander Technique is about changing habits developed over a lifetime, so although you may feel benefit after just one or two lessons, it’s important to recognise that you are learning a new life-skill. You may want to try out an introductory lesson before committing yourself to further learning.

Beyond this a course of six lessons is recommended but you will gain more benefit the more you do. In the back pain trial people receiving 24 lessons achieved the greatest benefit.

It will take time to integrate the changes you learn into your daily life but ultimately how many lessons you have will depend on how you get on with the Technique.

What will it cost ?

A standard one-to-one lesson lasts around 45 minutes and costs £37.

Gift vouchers are also available. Please contact me for further details.

Some private health insurers will cover the costs of Alexander Technique lessons and it may be worth enquiring if you have private health insurance. A list of companies reimbursing costs for Alexander Technique lessons, mainly on a consultant’s prescription, can be found here (opens a new window).

What should I consider before starting lessons ?

The Alexander Technique can be learned by anyone no matter what age or level of physical fitness or health.

It is a skill-set learned through a series of lessons given by a qualified AT teacher. It enables you, with your active participation, to take responsibility for your health and wellbeing. The skills you learn will last you for the rest of your life.

The Alexander Technique is not a therapy nor a form of exercise. Neither is it a quick fix for all of life’s problems, but if you are open to new ways of thinking and are willing to practice what you learn in the lessons it will enable you to make the changes you want to improve your quality of life.

It is unlikely you will experience any adverse effects from the gentle ‘hands-on’ direction which your teacher will give you, but occasionally people experience tiredness or aches and pains and very rarely, light-headedness, as your body adapts to new ways of being.

Alexander Teachers do not specifically treat any conditions you may have, instead employing a ‘whole body’ approach with your active participation, to improving your health and wellbeing. Neither do Alexander Teachers give medical diagnoses. If you have any health concerns at all it is important that you discuss these with your GP.

What if I have to cancel a lesson ?

If you need to cancel a lesson for any reason, you will need to give at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid liability for payment for the cancelled lesson. If I need to cancel a lesson, I will endeavour to give you 24 hours’ notice. If I fail to do this then I’ll give you your next lesson free of charge. In the event that a cancelled lesson has already been paid for the 24 hour-notice rule will still apply. We will then reschedule your lesson for a mutually convenient time.
